The Church considers the spiritual health of its employees of utmost importance. To that end, on two separate occasions (one during the fall and one during the spring) each calendar year, full-time and part-time employees will be required to take a “day” off from their regular work for a scheduled Day with the Lord (DWTL). For full-time, 40-hour-per-week employees, a “day” is 8 hours; for other full-time and part-time employees, refer to “Definitions of Employment Status” to calculate the hours in your “day”. The time for DWTL is considered a workday with a different function and should be scheduled in advance. Prior approval by the employee’s immediate supervisor is necessary. The DWTL must be used in such a way that it directly impacts the personal spiritual health of the employee. Guidelines for how an employee should use their DWTL are available from the Operations Team and include information on such spiritual disciplines as prayer, solitude, meditation, fasting, focused study, etc.

What is the Day with the Lord (DWTL)?

The Need to Withdraw

In ministry, there is always something important to do.

The demands of our role as messengers of the gospel seem to be never-ending.

But Jesus provides us with an example of the right priorities when it comes to working for God and being with God: He said to them,

“I must proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to other towns also because I was sent for this purpose.”

The news about Him spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Yet He often withdrew to deserted places and prayed (Luke 4:43, 5:15-16).

The Right Place and Time

You need to be alone. Jesus often withdrew to be alone with God (Luke 6:12).

You need to be undistracted by people, noise, and interruptions. If possible, you may want to be somewhere where you can pray out loud, sing, etc. without being self-conscious.

The Right Perspective
